[Commonplace book], 1779-1781.

Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of about 150 entries of verse, hymns, sermons, and religious anecdotes. Many of the hymns are by Stevens; others are by Isaac Watts and Phillis Wheatley. The manuscript also contains a funeral sermon on the interment of Miss Ann Williams; parting words from a parent to his dying daughter; an anecdote concerning James Hervey's admonition to a lady who loved the stage; another by Jonathan Edwards on his own wickedness; and other religious anecdotes by Timothy Rogers, Thomas Bradbury, George Whitefield, Abraham Booth, Philip Doddridge, Selina Hastings, countess of Huntingdon, John Milton, and James Thomson.

He entered Lincoln College, Oxford at the age of 18 and graduated with a B.A. in 1736 after a not very distinguished career. Phillis Wheatley (c. 1753-1784), first Black woman poet in America, was brought as an African slave in about 1761 to Boston, Mass., where she was purchased by John Wheatley.
